The Dutch American Friendship Treaty offers U.S. citizens one of the easiest and most accessible ways to live and run a business in the Netherlands. Currently there is a pilot process, making the procedure even faster and more flexible. DAFT applicants can receive residence permit approval before submitting proof of business registration or the €4,500 investment.
DAFT remains one of the most attractive immigration routes for American entrepreneurs. At Anywr Netherlands, our legal specialist Melissa Louw guides applicants through the full IND process.
Why DAFT is different?
Signed in 1956, the Dutch American Friendship Treaty was designed to promote trade and entrepreneurship between the U.S. and the Netherlands. Today, it provides a simplified residence permit for Americans who want to start or continue a business in the Netherlands. Unlike other visa types, DAFT does not require employer sponsorship, high capital investment, or formal qualifications.
Key requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Business registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK)
- €4,500 investment in a Dutch business account
- Dutch health insurance
The application process
The DAFT journey includes submitting your IND application, registering at the municipality for your BSN, opening a Dutch business bank account, and the coordination of completing your business documentation within six months. Thanks to DAFT, U.S. citizens can quickly establish themselves in the Netherlands, enjoying its strong business environment and high quality of life.
Who benefits from DAFT?
DAFT is ideal for freelancers, consultants, online entrepreneurs, small business owners, and anyone seeking a European base for their work.
Relocating to the Netherlands
Relocation to the Netherlands is not just the DAFT application, it’s about starting your life in a new country. Some differences between the US and the Netherlands are very obvious, to name just a few:
- Healthcare is accessible and predictable, mostly covered by a basic (and affordable) healthcare insurance which is mandatory for everybody who is registered in the Netherlands
- Smaller homes, effective use of space (meaning steeper stairs, compact rooms, less space around your house)
- Grocery shops are, compared to US standards, small in most locations
- The communication style of Dutch people is very direct. Honest feedback is considered helpful, not rude
It can be very helpful to ask a relocation company to assist you with getting to know the Netherlands, finding a home and your settling in formalities (like registration, opening a personal bank account, finding a doctor and dentist).
