Which immigration procedures are there for living and working in the Netherlands?

To hire a non-EU employee in the Netherlands in 2025, a company must apply for a work/residence permit. The only exception is an asylum seeker with a valid residence status, who is allowed to work without further ado. 

Which residence permits can a non-EU citizen use to work at my company?

– Highly skilled migrant, your company must be a recognized sponsor for the Dutch immigration Authorities IND and there are salary requirements.

– Intra-corporate transferee, your company does not necessarily have to recognized sponsorand there are salary requirements.

– EU Blue Card, your company does not necessarily have to recognized sponsorand there are salary requirements.

– Graduates with a valid residence permit for an orientation year.

– Researcher (Directive 2016/801)

– Start-up staff

– Asylum seeker with valid residence status

– Paid employment GVVA: For stays longer than 90 days. To be applied for via the IND. Please note that this is a complex application, where you must prove that you have recruited in the EU without success. 

– Work permit TWV: For asylum seekers who have been in the procedure for more than 6 months.

Which short-term visas are there?

Business visa, work permit or single permit (GVVA):

1) Business visa; non-EU employees who are in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days in a period of 180 days for the following reasons need a business visa (C visa):

– Visit to a customer, supplier or business partner
– Participation in a trade show or conference
– Education Negotiations or contract negotiations
CAUTION! The employee may not perform any other work than the above!

2) Work permit TWV: For short stays (less than 90 days) that fall outside the scope of a business visa.
