Can I bring my family to the Netherlands?

Can my partner and children join me in the Netherlands?

In general, yes. EU citizens can come to the Netherlands and stay/work here without an immigration procedure.

If your family members hold a non-EU passport, an immigration procedure is required but they can still join you.

Anywr Netherlands gladly assists. We work for companies and individuals moving to the Netherlands.

What kind of residence permits do they need?

Most of the times we apply for dependent permits for partner and children. We can do this together with your application, but separate applications are also possible. Your partner’s/children’s residence permits are valid as long as your permit is valid and as long you’re together.

Do they need an MVV (entry visa)?

This depends on the nationalities, some nationalities do not need a MVV. See Mvv exemptions | IND.

How long does the family immigration process take?

EU citizens can enter the Netherlands without going through any immigration procedure. Once they arrive, they must register with the municipality to receive their BSN (citizen service number).

For non-EU family members coming on a dependent residence permit, the immigration process typically takes around 4 weeks to receive approval from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) when the application is submitted jointly with the main applicant through a recognized sponsor. If the applications are submitted separately, the decision process for family members may take longer. The legal decision time is 90 days.

Depending on their nationality, they may need to collect an MVV (entry visa) from the Dutch embassy or consulate in their current country of residence. Issuance of the MVV usually takes up to 2 weeks. Once they receive the MVV, they can travel to the Netherlands.

If an MVV is not required, they can travel to the Netherlands with the IND approval letter. Upon arrival, they will provide biometrics to the IND. After that, it typically takes up to 3 weeks for the residence permit to be issued.

Can my partner work in the Netherlands?

Yes, as long as both your permit and your partner’s permit are valid, it is indeed possible to work while holding a dependent (partner/family member) residence permit. With this type of permit, your partner has free access to the Dutch labour market, meaning they can work without restrictions, including the option to start their own business.
