
Moving to the Netherlands, which steps do I have to take?

– Talk to your employer about whether you need a work visa or residence permit
– Apply for a visa or residence permit through the employer
– Send the signed employment contract, together with your passport, to your employer
– Arrange valid passports of your partner/family and (possibly legalized) birth certificates of everyone who comes with you
– Take out travel insurance
– Find temporary (for the first period) and think about how you are going to find permanent housing in the Netherlands
– Collect/legalize diplomas and other important documents if necessary
– Check if your driver’s license is valid in the Netherlands
– Agree on your first day of work and contract
– If children come along: arrange childcare or school
– Learn the basics of the Dutch language
– Register with the municipality
– Receive your citizen service number (BSN)
– Open a bank account
– Take out basic health insurance within 4 months of arrival
– Request a DigiD
– Find a GP and dentist
– After receipt of BSN, within 4 months after your first day of work: application for a 30% ruling
– Check if you are entitled to tax benefits
– Build a social network
– Check your tax status and pension accrual
– If necessary, renew your residence permit/that of family members on time
