The Netherlands needs talent. And sometimes that talent just doesn’t come from nearby. Fortunately, there are several ways to bring international employees to the Netherlands. But how do you know which immigration procedure to choose for your non-EU employees in the Netherlands? Here we explain it easily.
When do you use the Highly Skilled Migrant scheme/Kennismigranten procedure, the one for the Intra Corporate Transferee or the EU Blue Card?
1. Non EU employees in the Netherlands; HSM – Highly Skilled Migrant scheme/Kennismigranten procedure
This is the most popular route for companies looking to hire international talent.
What you need to know:
- Only companies that are recognized as sponsors or sponsors by the IND may submit this application.
- Income requirements apply (which vary by age).
- It’s fast and efficient – especially if your company already has experience with this procedure.
For whom? International professionals that you hire directly in the Netherlands, on a local contract.
2. ICT – Intra Corporate Transferee
Do you have a colleague in a country outside the EU that you want to bring to the Netherlands temporarily? Then this is the right route.
What you need to know:
- No recognized sponsorship required (useful for companies that have established themselves in the Netherlands for a short time or smaller companies), but faster decisions with.
- Only for managers, specialists or trainees who have been employed by a company outside the EU for at least 3 months.
- It is a temporary transfer (maximum 3 years) within the same company.
- The non-EU employees in the Netherlands remain on contract in the non-EU country.
- The application goes through the IND, the rules are slightly different than with HSM.
- There are salary requirements, at least equal to the Highly Skilled Migrant Scheme.
For whom? Employees of your own company outside the EU who come to work in the Netherlands temporarily.
3. Non EU employees in the Netherlands; de EU Blue Card
Sounds European – and it is. This card is intended for highly educated professionals from countries outside the EU, who (want to) work in several countries in the EU. Below are the most important points for the EU Blue Card for the non-EU employee in the Netherlands.
What you need to know:
- No recognized sponsorship required (useful for companies that have established themselves in the Netherlands for a short time or smaller companies), but faster decisions with.
- Makes it easier to work or move to other EU countries later.
For whom? Top international candidates with a university degree who are going or want to work in several EU countries.
And the soft landing?
Whichever route you choose, the success of your non-EU employee in the Netherlands starts with the offer. Think of clear communication, help with housing, and arranging practical matters. A good soft landing makes the difference between a temporary worker and a loyal colleague.
