For medical assistance in the Netherlands, you need to consult the family doctor before you go to the hospital. The only exception is an emergency. If there is an emergency you must call 112 directly.
The national emergency number in the Netherlands is 112 for police, fire and ambulance assistance.
You always have to consult a GP first, the hospital is only for emergency cases. If there is not a very urgent reason to go the hospital right away, the family doctor is the place to start.
Family doctors in the Netherlands have successfully concluded six years of studying medicine plus an additional three years specialized study to become a family doctor. They have good knowledge of many health subjects and know where to go if it’s beyond their capabilities. You are in good hands!
The GP will refer you to a specialist in the hospital in case medical care of a specialist is required.
In case of a medical emergency outside office hours you should always call the Huisartsenpost (Urgent Care). Do not go to the emergency room directly. They will tell you to call Urgent Care first.
Do you live in Amsterdam and have you not registered at an GP yet? The tourist doctor might be a good solution.
It is important to find a dentist soon after moving into your new home. Please be prepared for a long waiting time for the first appointment. In case of an emergency, however, your dentist will usually see you immediately, provided that you have registered. We advise you to bring your medical records.
For non emergency medical assistance in the Netherlands you need to be registered at a GP or dentist office. If you are not yet registered yet, we can find you a suitable GP or Dentist and assist with the registration process.
