The deadline for Brexit is now October 31st. It may well be that there will be no deal (Dutch bank ING thinks the chance is 25%) by that date. What does a no-deal Brexit mean for UK citizens living in the Netherlands?
Arrival before March 29, 2019
You have most probably received a temporary residence permit if:
- you arrived in the Netherlands prior to March 29, 2019 and
- you are registered at your local municipality
Should you not have received your temporary residence permit we advise you to contact the Dutch immigration authorities IND. It is important that you have this temporary permit before October 31st, 2019. The temporary residence permit will be valid until June 2020. After this date you will receive an invitation from the IND to apply for your future immigration status. Your employer will have to keep your residence permit and a copy of your passport on file after October 31.
Arrival after March 29, 2019
Did you arrive in the Netherlands after March 29, 2019? Until Brexit due date October 31st you will still be a EU citizen. The immigration authorities IND will only send you temporary residence permit after October 31st, 2019 and only if the UK should leave the EU without a deal. The temporary residence permit will be valid until June 2020. After this date you will receive an invitation from the IND to apply for your future immigration status. Your employer will have to keep your residence permit and a copy of your passport on file after October 31.
Arrival after October 31, 2019
Should Brexit take place without a deal you will be regarded a non EU citizen per that date. All UK citizens who will move to the Netherlands after October 31, 2019 will have to apply for a residence permit. You will only be able to work here if your permit allows you to do so, for example with a highly skilled migrant or an intra corporate transferee permit.
You will find more information on the IND’s website. Or just send me a note, Anywr Netherlands is there for you!
